Title: Winter Hours Pdf Prose, Prose Poems, and Poems
"What good company Mary Oliver is!" the Los Angeles Times has remarked. And never more so than in this extraordinary and engaging gathering of nine essays, accompanied by a brief selection of new prose poems and poems. (One of the essays has been chosen as among the best of the year by The Best American Essays 1998, another by The Anchor Essay Annual.) With the grace and precision that have won her legions of admirers, Oliver talks here of turtle eggs and housebuilding, of her surprise at the sudden powerful flight of swans, of the "thousand unbreakable links between each of us and everything else." She talks of her own poems and of some of her favorite poets: Poe, writing of "our unescapable destiny," Frost and his ability to convey at once that "everything is all right, and everything is not all right," the "unmistakably joyful" Hopkins, and Whitman, seeking through his poetry "the replication of a miracle." And Oliver offers us a glimpse as well of her "private and natural self -- something that must in the future be taken into consideration by any who would claim to know me."

Wow Oliver has a beautiful, lyrical tempo to her prose. Her words float along, seeming effortless, and suddenly the readers realize layers of life have been pealed away and you are examining the soul's core. She has a way with words Mary Oliver merges poems and prose in this compact book. It is a unique combination and I like it a lot.For the Love of Mary Like All Of MAry Books…Beautiful.

If you suffer from arthritis or other type of inflammatory disease, you must get this book! I knew that my diet was affecting my osteoarthritis pain. I just needed a guide to help me know what to eat and what not to eat. Here it is and it's rater simple - whole foods.I reduced my arthritis pain from an 8 to a 2. It really works if you stick to it. The authors have a good website, blog and newsletter.Boring to read Boring to read. Exercises for someone that has no health challenges. And the diet isn't easily accessible. Sugar is a major cause of inflammation and the recipes for desserts are heavy in sugar. Either very out of date, or just plain ridiculous.Highly Recommended for intro to Anti-Inflam lifestyle excellent book - a nice step by step walk into a complete diet overhaul. This is a way of life (anti-inflam diet) and other books/recipes have made it so clinical and boring that I've never followed thru for long. This book has support from the authors and an active website that frequently offers new recipes, tips and other info in addition to an 'occasional' email if you are on the list. With one of the authors having MS and not being able to deviate from anti-inflam, you can trust their ingredients. Many are expensive but the food selections here are quite generous compared to other books I have. Is nice to see others LIVING anti-inflam lifestyle. I got the book used but it is even worth the retail price if you are serious about moving to a anti-inflam lifestyle.

FOREWORD BY LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA AND LUIS A. MIRANDA, JR.

The true story of how a group of chefs fed hundreds of thousands of hungry Americans after Hurricane Maria and touched the hearts of many more

Chef José Andrés arrived in Puerto Rico four days after Hurricane Maria ripped through the island. The economy was destroyed and for most people there was no clean water, no food, no power, no gas, and no way to communicate with the outside world.

Andrés addressed the humanitarian crisis the only way he knew how: by feeding people, one hot meal at a time. From serving sancocho with his friend José Enrique at Enrique’s ravaged restaurant in San Juan to eventually cooking 100,000 meals a day at more than a dozen kitchens across the island, Andrés and his team fed hundreds of thousands of people, including with massive paellas made to serve thousands of people alone.. At the same time, they also confronted a crisis with deep roots, as well as the broken and wasteful system that helps keep some of the biggest charities and NGOs in business.

Based on Andrés’s insider’s take as well as on meetings, messages, and conversations he had while in Puerto Rico, We Fed an Island movingly describes how a network of community kitchens activated real change and tells an extraordinary story of hope in the face of disasters both natural and man-made, offering suggestions for how to address a crisis like this in the future.

Beyond that, a portion of the proceeds from the book will be donated to the Chef Relief Network of World Central Kitchen for efforts in Puerto Rico and beyond.

Honest and accurate After living through hurricane Maria and the harrowing months that followed, I tried to avoid reading any more stories about what happened. It just brought everything back. However, when I came upon this book I decided to buy it as a gift for my son, who had worked as a volunteer at José Andrés' World Central Kitchen at El Choliseo after the hurricane. I began to read it before giving it to him … and could not put it down! This book tells the true story of what actually happened. What Chef José Andrés accomplished was extraordinary, but the story behind it is even more impressive. It is a story of sheer willpower, against insurmountable odds, of making contact with the people, of partnering with the many wonderful chefs we have in PR, with our local producers and our local resources. It exposes the inefficiency of red tape and bureaucracy in the face of a natural disaster. The authors could not have told it better. They mince no words and structured the book in a way that makes for a captivating read.It is a must read for anyone who likes a good story, who is interested in disaster relief, or is in the potential path of a natural disaster. Certainly, it is a must read for anyone who lived through hurricane Maria. It is a story that HAD to be told. This book also gives us the opportunity to say a HUGE thank you to José Andrés and to all those who came to help, to our relatives, to our friends and our friends' friends , who showed up from afar in more ways than one.¡GRACIAS, José Andrés!Humanity at its best ( and worst ) Heartbreaking yet inspiring story of the power of a good meal during a dreadful crisis. Chef Jose ignored the word NO and fed 3 million meals with an army of volunteers. Whilst the NGO’s like Red Cross and government bodies like FEMA did so very little. In America . NOT a third world country, AMERICA ! If Jose could use his experience to retrain not for profits , imagine what a difference it would make. Eye opening. The truth will empower you (after it pisses you off) Get the day to day reality of the aftermath of Hurricane Maria’s devastating path across Puerto Rico. Chef Andres reports from his position of persistence and passion to feed hot meals to people in need without reliable water, power or fuel. His witness to the basic corruption and distance of large institutions is unsurprising and with good lessons to be learned.
