“A meditation on solitude, wildness and survival.” —The Wall Street Journal“Astonishing. . . . An absorbing exploration of solitude and man’s eroding relationship with the natural world.” —The Atlantic “Campfire-friendly and thermos-ready, easily drained in one warm, rummy slug. It also raises a variety of profound questions—about the role of solitude, about the value of suffering, about the diversity of human needs.” —The New York Times “[A] fascinating story. . . . Finkel manages to pry powerful words from the man who may hold the world title for silent retreat.” —San Francisco Chronicle“Reveals, in vivid detail, how Christopher Knight escaped society more completely than most anybody else in human history.” —Outside “[An] intriguing account of Knight’s capture and confessions.” —USA Today “A story that takes the two primary human relationships—to nature and to one another—and deftly upends our assumptions about both. This was a breathtaking book to read and many weeks later I am still thinking about the implications for our society and—by extension—for my own life.” —Sebastian Junger, author of Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging “As strong as Finkel’s storytelling instincts and prose are, his greatest feat in writing The Stranger in the Woods is the journalistic diligence and humanity he brought to Knight. . . . Through Finkel, Knight is able to speak up with his own voice at last.” —Paste “[Knight’s] story will speak to anyone who has ever walked through the wilderness and considered, even for a moment, whether ever to leave.” —Field & Stream “Moving and haunting. . . . A beautifully rendered, carefully researched story.” —PopMatters  “Riveting. . . . A stunning look inside at the life and inner thoughts of one of our era’s most confounding characters.” —Bangor Daily News “Thought-provoking and enduring . . . Will leave readers thinking deeply about modern society, the search for meaning, and the impact of solitude. Finkel is a skilled storyteller.” —Portland Press Herald (Maine) “I was drawn through these pages in a single sitting—their pull is true and magnetic. . . . [Knight’s] tale becomes universal thanks to the expert care of Finkel’s writing. . . The Stranger in the Woods is, ultimately, a meditation on the pains of social obligation and the longing toward retreat that resides in us all.” —Michael Harris, The Globe and Mail (Toronto) “Michael Finkel has done something magical with this profound book . . . [His] investigation runs deep, summoning . . . the human history of our own attempts to find meaning in a noisy world.” —Michael Paterniti, author of Driving Mr. Albert: A Trip Across America with Einstein’s Brain “Chris Knight is an American original . . . I burned through this haunting tale in one rapt sitting.” —John Vaillant, author of The Golden Spruce: A True Story of Myth, Madness, and Greed Michael Finkel is the author of True Story: Murder, Memoir, Mea Culpa, which was adapted into a 2015 major motion picture. He has written for National Geographic, GQ, Rolling Stone, Esquire, Vanity Fair, The Atlantic, and The New York Times Magazine. He lives in western Montana.

A National Geographic Best Book of the Year

National Bestseller

Many people dream of escaping modern life. Most will never act on it—but in 1986, twenty-year-old Christopher Knight did just that when he left his home in Massachusetts, drove to Maine, and disappeared into the woods. He would not have a conversation with another person for the next twenty-seven years.

Drawing on extensive interviews with Knight himself, journalist Michael Finkel shows how Knight lived in a tent in a secluded encampment, developing ingenious ways to store provisions and stave off frostbite during the winters. A former alarm technician, he stealthily broke into nearby cottages for food, books, and supplies, taking only what he needed but sowing unease in a community plagued by his mysterious burglaries. Since returning to the world, he has faced unique challenges—and compelled us to reexamine our assumptions about what makes a good life. By turns riveting and thought-provoking, The Stranger in the Woods gives us a deeply moving portrait of a man determined to live his own way.

If you are like me—a dreamer After reading a few chapters of this book, I was hooked immediately. I couldn't put it down. As someone who is drawn both to nature and seclusion, I was fascinated by Christopher Knight's retreat from modern, Western society, into the heart of Maine's woods. Many of us dream of secluding from the busyness of modern living—the fast-paced, noisy, cyclical nature in which life has become; yet many of us do not have the courage or tenacity to pursue such a dream, much less achieve this dream for the amount of time that Knight did.If you are like me—a dreamer, a wanderer, a hopeless romantic for escape—then this book will instantly capture you. You will be drawn into a story of a man that psychologists and therapists have no categories for. You will be drawn into a story of a man who survives the intensity of Maine's weather and the silence of isolation. I promise, whether you agree with his choices or not, you will be drawn into this man's life, enthralled by his zeal for solitude, and his utter brilliance in the entire quest. On a practical level, Michael Finkel has written this biographical account excellently. The book is written well, leaving you wanting more and more of the story when the chapters end. The chapters are short so that one can read briefly each night and still make significant headway in a few weeks. The account of Knight's life is both formatted in narrative and in some ways, topically. If you are looking for a new book that will capture your attention, make you question some of your choices, and leave you desiring more out of life—please, pick up this book!

Willpower Doesn't Work Download

Title: Willpower Doesn't Work Pdf

We rely on willpower to create change in our lives...but what if we're thinking about it all wrong? In Willpower Doesn't Work, Benjamin Hardy explains that willpower is nothing more than a dangerous fad - one that is bound to lead to failure. Instead of "white-knuckling" your way to change, you need to instead alter your surroundings to support your goals. This book shows you how.

The world around us is fast-paced, confusing, and full of distractions. It's easy to lose focus on what you want to achieve, and your willpower won't last long if your environment is in conflict with your goals - eventually the environment will win out. Willpower Doesn't Work is the needed guide for today's overstimulating and addicting environment. Willpower Doesn't Work will specifically teach you:

  • How to make the biggest decisions of your life - and why those decisions must be made in specific settings
  • How to create a daily "sacred" environment to live your life with intention and not get sucked into the cultural addictions
  • How to invest big in yourself to upgrade your environment and mind-set
  • How to put "forcing functions" in your life - so your default behaviors are precisely what you want them to be
  • How to quickly put yourself in proximity to the most successful people in the world - and how to adapt their knowledge and skills to yourself even quicker
  • How to create an environment where endless creativity and boundless productivity is the norm

Benjamin Hardy will show you that nurture is far more powerful than your nature and teach you how to create and control your environment so your environment will not create and control you.

If you've read his articles you have most of this book already. If you have read his articles then you know much of the book already. Although he says willpower doesn't work, it is part of the 100% commitment and working through your fears. His write-up on journaling and planning are very clear--I think more than his articles. I was looking for something to set some personal goals for myself, but this doesn't really address goals that are not business related. He talks about the growth mindset in terms of adaptive learn which is probably one of the best parts of the book. Most of his examples are for business as well. I don't see anything new in the book. If you just want to do something to help you with goals like losing weight or working on your personal finances, this isn't it. I think it could have been a better book if he did something on those types of goals as well as business. Also, he does mention getting the skin in the game either with finances or social implications. How many of use have paid for an expensive gym membership and told all our friends we were going to get buff and then a few months later we are on the couch. Maybe money and social pressures make some people motivated but not that many.Want to know how to change your life? Step 1. Open your mind to welcome a fresh perspective.Step 2. Okay, now really open your mind.Step 3. Read this book.Step 4. Change your environment for success.Of course it’s not that simple, but damn it's a good start! Ben Hardy’s latest work, Willpower Doesn’t Work, is a powerful read that will help you build a better life for yourself. Starting with understanding what you really want in life, why you haven’t achieved those things yet, how to set up your environment to align with the life you desire, and the challenge/plan to make it happen. This book can be a bit confronting if you’re not ready for it, but if you’re in it to get serious about changing your life for the better, add this one to your list.Like seriously, add this sucker to your cart right now and check out.I’ll wait for you to get back……You there? Good. Okay while you wait for it to arrive in the mail, get excited for the gold you just purchased for a mere $20. What a steal! This read won’t do much for you though if you think you have it all figured out. And maybe you do! Are you living your dreams? If so… wait, why are you here reading this? I mean that’s cool, we are always evolving - good for you! Okay for the rest of us, if you are considering this book, that means you are ready to unstuck yourself from your current life and as Beyonce would say “let me upgrade you!”My point is this. It’s easy to gloss over a few of these ideas and think you understand, but life is full of stuff like that. We become disengaged even when the answers are staring us in the face! So please do yourself a favor, read this from a place of curiosity and discover. These ideas are high level and Ben does a fantastic job of breaking them down and connecting the dots. Then actually implement these things and see for yourself! This is the best way to learn after all. Use those beautiful critical thinking skills to decide what works for you and what doesn’t.For me, this book works. 10/10. It’s essentially a blueprint for life that I am implementing fully this year and beyond. This is definitely a book I will be recommending to everyone I know who wants to seize the reins in their life. I’m confident I’m on a path to success and I hope you are, too!

Great read Loved this story and the characters!Hated to see the book end.Good to read more by this author.Love the happy ending.Good story but... the book could have undergone at least one more edit, assuming it had already had at least one. Misplaced modifiers galore. Missing punctuation. Transitions? Very few. I could go on. At the end I wondered whether this line of books is supposed to read like the Reader's Digest Condensed version. Or, as I suspect, editors don't edit anymore. The 4 stars are for storyline.A charming story A great first novel from the author. Interesting characters, very good plot and a lot of action. With a backdrop of WWII and the drama of England dealing with the war.

Factfulness Download

Title: Factfulness Pdf Ten Reasons We're Wrong About the World--and Why Things Are Better Than You Think

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“One of the most important books I’ve ever read—an indispensable guide to thinking clearly about the world.” – Bill Gates

“Hans Rosling tells the story of ‘the secret silent miracle of human progress’ as only he can. But Factfulness does much more than that. It also explains why progress is so often secret and silent and teaches readers how to see it clearly.” Melinda Gates

"Factfulness by Hans Rosling, an outstanding international public health expert, is a hopeful book about the potential for human progress when we work off facts rather than our inherent biases." - Former U.S. President Barack Obama

Factfulness: The stress-reducing habit of only carrying opinions for which you have strong supporting facts.

When asked simple questions about global trends—what percentage of the world’s population live in poverty; why the world’s population is increasing; how many girls finish school—we systematically get the answers wrong. So wrong that a chimpanzee choosing answers at random will consistently outguess teachers, journalists, Nobel laureates, and investment bankers.

In Factfulness, Professor of International Health and global TED phenomenon Hans Rosling, together with his two long-time collaborators, Anna and Ola, offers a radical new explanation of why this happens. They reveal the ten instincts that distort our perspective—from our tendency to divide the world into two camps (usually some version of us and them) to the way we consume media (where fear rules) to how we perceive progress (believing that most things are getting worse).

Our problem is that we don’t know what we don’t know, and even our guesses are informed by unconscious and predictable biases.

It turns out that the world, for all its imperfections, is in a much better state than we might think. That doesn’t mean there aren’t real concerns. But when we worry about everything all the time instead of embracing a worldview based on facts, we can lose our ability to focus on the things that threaten us most.

Inspiring and revelatory, filled with lively anecdotes and moving stories, Factfulness is an urgent and essential book that will change the way you see the world and empower you to respond to the crises and opportunities of the future.

“This book is my last battle in my life-long mission to fight devastating ignorance…Previously I armed myself with huge data sets, eye-opening software, an energetic learning style and a Swedish bayonet for sword-swallowing. It wasn’t enough. But I hope this book will be.” Hans Rosling, February 2017.

Similar to Enlightenment Now... But With Unforgettable Real World Examples I read Steve Pinker’s Enlightenment Now prior to reading Factfulness, primarily because I got Pinker's book first. But I’m glad that it happened that way. Though I enjoyed Enlightenment Now, I think Factfulness drives home the same message that our world is truly making positive progress, but with such gripping real world observations that it almost reads more like Dr. Hans Rosling’s memoir.Dr. Rosling’s stories of working as a medical doctor in some of the countries that many Westerners would lump under the stereotype of an impoverished “Third World” are as real as it gets. His stories from the field illustrate the devastating results that our ignorance and biases can create. But others so clearly show the progress we, as a species, have made as a result of our better understanding of the facts.I would definitely recommend reading both Enlightenment Now, for a more academic and research-based perspective, and Factfulness, for its memorable stories that drive home the need for fact-based thinking.Everyone should read this. I bought this book after seeing Bill Gates recommendation, and I have been really enjoying it. It goes a long way towards explaining human cognitive behavior in the face of today's "us vs. them" social media environment, as well as more historical cases where people just have a really hard time accepting the fact that things are almost always better than they think they are, and the extremes are much rarer than most people would guess. It ought to be required reading at the high school level IMHO.It's very well written and readable (the author is famous for his Ted talks on the subject). He really wants to help everyone understand and learn how to better evaluate what they hear about the world.A couple notes: you can download a whole chapter of the book from Bill Gates web site if you want to read more of it in advance. The Kindle version is currently broken on some devices (at least my Chromebook running the Android Kindle app) where it won't render any page contents properly unless you tap to zoom out to the page browsing mode where it does look correct.
