“Every so often someone names an invisible pattern in society with such honesty and accuracy that it becomes a seed of a national conversation. Elizabeth White has brought to light the unexpected challenges of Boomers turning the corner into older age.  She offers straight talk to her generation while giving everyone an eye-opening look at the travails of aging out of relevance in America.” (Vicki Robin, author of Your Money or Your Life and Blessing the Hands That Feed Us)“This relevant and well-researched book will appeal not only to those 55 plus, but to the generation coming right behind them who may face similar issues.” (Booklist (starred review))"Providing practical solutions with a focus on retirement and maximizing savings, White maintains authority with a realistic, empathetic tone throughout. This deeply useful work will resonate with aging readers of all income levels and situations." (Publishers Weekly)"Generously guides a generation of Americans finding a healthy, sustainable new normal and better life in their golden years." (Dylan Schleicher 800-CEO-READ)"55, Underemployed, and Faking Normal is required reading for all those who fear the finances of longer lives and a job market rife with age discrimination—in other words, everyone. Get a copy and breathe a bit easier: This book doubles as a lifesaving device!" (Marc Freedman, president and CEO of Encore.org and author of How to Live Forever: The Enduring Power of Connecting the Generations)"Elizabeth White's story is poignant and powerful. And, her new book is a fierce, insightful rallying call for both personal resilience and political action. 55, Underemployed, and Faking Normal is a tale of our age and our aging and it's one of my favorite books on the subject of midlife and beyond." (Chip Conley, Hospitality Entrepreneur and Author of Wisdom@Work: The Making of a Modern Elder) Elizabeth White is an author and aging solutions advocate for older adults facing uncertain work and financial insecurity. Most recently she served as Special Advisor to the Executive Director of Senior Service America. Before joining SSA, she was the Chief Operating Officer of a midsize non-profit focused on improving economic conditions in Africa. She is also an entrepreneur, having co-founded and led a chain of decorative home stores in Washington, DC, Philadelphia and New York. She began her career in international development at the World Bank. Ms. White earned an MBA from Harvard Business School, a Masters in International Studies from Johns Hopkins University, and a BS in Political Science from Oberlin College. A self-described “army brat,” she grew up in various countries in Europe and North Africa. She resides in Washington, DC with her daughter and grandson. She is the author of 55, Unemployed, and Faking Normal.

For the millions of people in their fifties and sixties who find themselves out of work, unable to find a job, and financially incapable of retiring, here’s a practical plan for getting past any blame or shame, overcoming denial, and finding a path to a new normal.

Elizabeth White has an impressive resume, which includes advanced degrees from Harvard and Johns Hopkins and a distinguished employment history. She started a business that failed and then tried to re-enter the work force in her mid-fifties, only to learn that there is little demand for workers her age, even with her outstanding resume. Her retirement savings account was largely depleted by her business. For a while Elizabeth lived in denial, but then had to begin to adjust to her new reality, shedding the gym membership, getting a roommate, forgoing restaurant meals, and so on. She soon learned she wasn’t alone: there are millions of Americans in her predicament and worse, exhausted trying to survive and overcome every day.

In 55, Underemployed, and Faking Normal, Elizabeth invites you to join her in looking beyond your immediate surroundings and circumstances to what is possible in the new normal of financial insecurity. You’re in your fifties and sixties, like Elizabeth, and may have saved nothing or not nearly enough to retire. It’s too late for blame or shame—and it wouldn’t help anyway. What you want to know is what you can do now to have a shot at a decent retirement. Or, as Elizabeth puts it, “small up to create the best possible life on less income.”

Affirming and empowering, this book is a must-have for anyone whose income has suddenly diminished or even disappeared. With more than 100 online resources, it guides you through the emotional aspects of where you’ve landed and offers practical advice and options. If you’re ready to stop beating up on yourself and get serious about feeling good again, this book is for you.

Practical, Pragmatic, and Predictive Rarely do I recommend a book so highly, however this one is a must-read.Elizabeth delivers content that takes the lid off of life issues for many seasoned professionals who have hit a wall or are about to hit one in some fashion. For some, it's dealing with age discrimination, for others it's life changes that have upended their reality, and for others is coming to the realization that life as it was may not be life as it is or will be.It's candid and sugar-coats nothing, making it resonate so succinctly. I've re-read sections multiple times, and with each re-read, another level of reality - one that many would prefer to ignore - comes into focus. Advice along with words/stories from those who have and are living this new reality makes this a must-read for anyone facing or thinking about tomorrow. Have recommended it to many and will continue to do so.A Strategic Planner to navigate on the journey ahead This book is absolutely thought-provoking, honest, and a MUST read! It combines White’s life changing experiences, wise observances, and antidotes with brilliant clarity in a conversational tone. This book literally saved me and put my life on a strategic course for the better. In these days of uncertainty with the economy, jobs, housing, tech, social culture, and politics (White describes as the ‘new normal’), it just gave me the clearness I sorely needed at exactly the right time. I’m in the process of creating what White coined as a Resilience Circle so people can gather, share information and learn from each other. Absolutely perfect. One of the most satisfying reads ever. Life changing. I keep rereading passages in the book because every sentence was a light bulb moment. Now, I don’t leave home without it!Finally - useful, helpful, knowledgeable advice! What a brilliant evaluation of the elephant in the room haunting so many of us (who knew there were so many!). Ms. White made me aware that: I'm not alone, the facts and figures provided are proof of the enormity and eventual impact of this issue, but most importantly, the suggestions and recommendations given are already proving to be helpful in relieving this financial/morale-draining situation. Can't wait for a follow-up to this book!
